So this Sunday is the Super Bowl in NYC. Who is on shift this Sunday?
I have always thought that working on Super Bowl Sunday or any other major sporting championship isn’t all bad. I live near the University of Notre Dame and if we are working during their games, it can turn into a little tailgate right there at the station.
Who else does this? To me it’s right up there with working Thanksgiving or Christmas. Everyone will bring in something to eat and we’ll have a good breakfast and then just set out a nice spread for the crews. Of course being on Engine 1 you always risk the chance of missing the game winning play with the dreaded “ground level fall” call. But hey, after all, we are at work. And what’s even funnier about that, when you do go on a call during the big game and you get to the house and they have the game on. Do you catch yourself peeking at the score? You can admit it, its okay.
I know we have all been there. That is what I love about the fire service and is the theme of this blog. You could be at FDNY or Smallville, USA, and find the same stuff going on. Oh, speaking of FDNY, at times we would let some of them crash at our stations if they came in town for a Notre Dame game. Those guys like to party, haha!
Stay safe Brothers and Sisters!
