Earlier today on the Facebook Page I posted a simple question. What is the number one thing that kills firefighters?
Of the 64 responses we have everything from Ex-wives to politics and everything in between. Now on a serious note, many answered with heart attacks. Technically that isn’t a wrong answer. Number one thing that kills firefighters, on the fire ground, is heart attacks. Sorry, was sort of trick question.
The answer I was looking for is cancer and there were quite a few did answer with cancer. Ladies and Gentlemen, Cancer is beating the hell out of us. Cancer, overall, kills the most firefighters.
We need to be smart about this. The days of overhauling without a mask are over. Research has shown that after a fire the conditions inside are extremely toxic. Please, use your SCBA while overhauling.
That is pretty simple, right? But did you know now we are even dealing with forehead cancer? Yes, forehead cancer. You know that cushy head band inside your helmet that never gets clean? Yes, that one, forehead cancer. Most departments are putting baby wipes on trucks now. So you can wash your face and hands right away.
Not done yet, now there is an increase in testicular cancer so it is recommended to get out of your night pants, bunker gear, as soon as possible.
And those cool, leather helmets, all covered in carcinogens, you know, the ones that prove what a bad ass you are? Yeah, those need to be cleaned up. Not cool anymore to wear cancer on your head. Sorry East Coast.
This is real and we need to be thinking all the time about our environment and what is on us. Ever wonder why states have presumptive cancer laws? Thank the IAFF for getting through.
Take care of each other out there!
